Ryle on Assurance

Comments

Interesting. I sort of agree with his words...but for me, that assurance is not of some future state after death...but of something right now. That even now, in this moment, everything is okay. And he's right, that assurance enables us to throw ourselves into our lives, live more fully, act more graciously, accept our pain and suffering. But I feel like there's a fine line between the truth of this, and say, as an extreme example...a person who participates in a suicide bombing because of the assurance of their entrance into heaven. I know it's a different religion...but the concept I think needs to be addressed.

What's the difference between Abraham, who is able to give up his son because of this assurance (which I don't think had anything really to do with Heaven) and trusts that somehow he will get it back (which he does)....versus the suicide bomber who gives up the lives of other people to do "God's Will" on the assurance of a place in heaven?

Just food for thought really...something I've been thinking about lately. :)
